Voces8A group of SRR Year 7 and 8 pupils attended on Saturday 16th May a vocal workshop at St Luke’s Church in Clapham with Voces8, a vocal group which sings music in a variety of styles from the sacred to pop and jazz arrangements. They have performed all over the UK and Europe and have developed an exciting educational programme for school children. The SRR group, drawn largely from the SRR Chamber Choir, engaged in a range of vocal exercises and learnt about harmony, resonance and balance. Voces8’s inspirational leader, the baritone Paul Smith and his singers brought an infectious enthusiasm to the session which culminated in a beautiful rendition of a four-part piece by the great English Renaissance composer William Byrd with the SRR pupils taking the soprano part. The pupils behaved impeccably (of course!) and performed “Oh Happy Day” in three-part harmony for the Voces8 group. Many thanks to Miss Firman, Director of Music for leading the group and arranging the visit.

Report by Seamus Joyce, Foundation Governor

“Ten days ago I was given a golden opportunity by Gary McKeown, a dad at St Elizabeth's primary school. Gary offered his complete office furniture to both St Elizabeth's and St. Richard Reynolds schools as he was moving to serviced offices. I viewed the furniture last week and was overwhelmed by the amount and the quality of the furniture. I knew then that I was leaving nothing behind and it would reach its final destination at any cost. The email chains started last Tuesday and with great support from parents of St Richard Reynolds we worked the challenge. Sourcing transport, liaising with building managers, driving through busy traffic while working through my night shifts at Westminster City Council all created minor challenges but there was great satisfaction when I locked the school gates at 3pm on Sunday. We will all look back on this weekend one day and say WOW we actually did all that moving in one weekend. I think the husband 'Brownie Points' scale will have reached new levels this weekend and not forgetting our school mums who also played an important part. I was highly impressed with the two school pupils who helped in Moorgate on Saturday they should both receive several house points for their efforts. I will be having a beer debrief at the Albany public house on Friday 22nd of May from 9pm if anyone would like to join the volunteers express. This afternoon I secured around 50 new fire extinguishers for our school so the quest goes on and on!”

Business Manager, Mrs Fisher commented: “Amazing - Thank you so much everyone for all your help. I've been looking at the furniture this morning and can't believe the quality and quantity. I hope there weren't too many sore backs the next morning!”

Around 60 St Richard Reynolds pupils performed a variety of choral and instrumental works including a marvellous composition by Alex Gold performed by the author (who also designed the programme) and fellow Year 8 pupil, Lottie Pink. The event was masterminded by Director of Music, Caroline Firman, and formed part of a fortnight of events and activities in the St Richard Reynolds Music Festival. Miss Firman masterfully led the packed audience of parents, friends and staff in a choral finale. Mr Burke summed up the evening by stressing the importance of creativity in the educational development of our pupils and urged all who took part to be committed to developing their musical talents in the years ahead. Thanks to Miss Firman for staging such a splendid and enjoyable evening for the pupils and the audience. Thanks, as ever, to the Friends of SRR for providing refreshments
