We have created a broad curriculum to provide students with opportunities to continue to study subjects that are familiar to them and new subjects that give them more varied experiences to lead into future work or study. Students choose three A Level courses, all of which are externally examined at the end of Year 13. We know that this enables students to focus their efforts and achieve the best possible results.
Each Sixth Form student studies three A level subjects* during their two year programme of study. All subjects are externally examined at the end of Year 13 with a series of internal assessments at various points throughout the two years. In addition, students can apply to take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), worth half an A Level. This runs from the Spring Term of Year 12 until Christmas of Year 13.
We anticipate that the vast majority of our students will continue to study beyond the Sixth Form and attend universities, hence the traditional, academic curriculum. In addition to formal academic study, the students participate in a range of wider curriculum activities including SHaPE (link), Service (link), Faith in Action (link).
Independent study is a very important part of success at A level. It is expected that, for every lesson our students have, they will do an hour’s worth of independent study either during study periods in College, or as part of their homework in the evening or at weekends. This is the equivalent of five hours per subject per week. Independent study will be made up from a combination of directed tasks set by the class teacher and additional reading, research and revision instigated by the student themselves. To manage independent work, our students and staff make full use of the range of benefits that Google Classroom offers including online submission of work, live collaboration and mobile phone based app and notifications.
