Free School Meals

Free School Meals Changes for Sixth Form Students – September 2026

From September 2026, important changes to the government’s Post-16 Free School Meals (FSM) eligibility rules will come into effect.

The household income threshold for families receiving Universal Credit is being removed, meaning more students may now qualify for FSM support. However, existing FSM protection arrangements are ending, so all eligible families must reapply under the new rules.

We strongly encourage all families receiving Universal Credit to complete the confidential application form, even if students bring packed lunches or prefer alternative meal options. FSM registration not only provides access to meal support, but may also unlock additional funding and wider financial assistance for students and the Sixth Form.

FSM eligibility is often used as evidence when assessing support through the 16–19 Discretionary Bursary Fund and other college assistance programmes. Students registered for FSM may therefore be better placed to access help with education-related costs such as:

  • Transport and travel
  • Books and equipment
  • Educational resources
  • Trips and enrichment activities

Even if students do not regularly use the school meal allowance, families are encouraged to apply. Applications should be submitted by 5 July 2026 to ensure accounts are correctly set up for the autumn term.
