‘Great schools are filled with teachers talking about learning and teaching’ Dylan Wiliam
At St Richard Reynolds Catholic College, our core purpose is to deliver an outstanding educational experience where every pupil flourishes spiritually, intellectually, morally and physically. Guided by our faith, we nurture an inspiring, child-centered and academically rigorous environment where young people are loved, listened to, challenged and inspired to open their hearts and minds to God.
Teaching and learning at St Richard Reynolds are rooted in our SRR10 framework, which integrates Barak Rosenshine’s principles of instruction and a Teaching for Mastery approach. Lessons prioritise systematic review of prior knowledge, clear modeling, effective scaffolding, high-level questioning and small-step progression. By applying Cognitive Load Theory, we carefully sequence learning episodes so pupils build secure schema and retain complex understanding over time.
We also prioritise communication through a progressive, cross-curricular Oracy curriculum (Reception to Year 6) informed by Voice 21, the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and the Nuffield Early Language Intervention (NELI). By teaching spoken language skills explicitly and sequentially, we empower our children to communicate with confidence, achieving success in both their education and their wider lives..

SRR10 & Brilliant Basics
The SRR10 and Brilliant Basics are a shorthand for the strategies we expect our teachers to use to plan and deliver outstanding teaching at SRRCC. They provide an outline for the everyday high quality interactions, teaching and processes that are our hallmark. We believe that a consistently managed classroom environment, focusing on these strategies and getting them right, will enable great learning for our young people
